The Department of Anesthesia is proud to feature an exceptional team of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, who play an integral role in delivering high-quality patient care.

APP fellows are included during their fellowship year, reflecting our commitment to teaching and mentoring the next generation of advanced practice providers. This hands-on training ensures the continued excellence and innovation in anesthesia care.

Surgical and Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (SNICU)

Our SNICU is the largest intensive care unit in Iowa, seeing more than 2,500 patients each year. Using a team approach, the SNICU staff members develop a supportive atmosphere for the patient and the patient's families.

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

Our CVICU team cares for post-surgical patients including cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. Our patient population includes those who require advanced cardiac therapies including devices such as ECMO, LVAD, RVAD, and Impella. The CVICU provides specialized care for those who have received heart and lung transplants. The CVICU APP team works collaboratively with our intensivist to provide high quality patient centered care.

Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellows

The UI Health Care Critical Care APP Fellowship is a one-year post-graduate fellowship designed to give Advanced Practice Providers the tools to practice at the highest level of their license within any critical care environment. We aim to equip the next generation of critical care APPs with the knowledge and skills needed to provide exceptional patient care by using evidence-based medicine and exposing them to a diverse patient population within a tertiary care center.
