The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking a qualified Critical Care Intensivist to join a collaborative, interdisciplinary team dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced clinical and academic intensivists in the Surgical and Neurosciences ICU (SNICU) and Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), within a team-based model that includes residents, fellows, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs), and Physician Assistants (PAs). In addition to clinical responsibilities, the position involves active supervision and mentorship of students, residents, fellows, SRNAs, and non-anesthesia rotators, with a strong emphasis on education and training in a high-acuity academic environment. Faculty appointments are available on the Clinical or Tenure Track at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications. Appointment at the rank of Instructor (non-track) may also be considered.


Responsibilities of this position include:



  • Provide high-quality, team-based anesthesia and critical care in surgical and cardiovascular intensive care units.

  • Serve as an integral member of a multidisciplinary care team, collaborating with physicians, APPs, nurses, and allied health professionals to optimize patient outcomes

  • Actively participate in the academic mission of the Department and the Carver College of Medicine, including teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development

  • Supervise and provide formative developmental feedback to medical students, residents, fellows, SRNAs, and non-anesthesia rotators in both clinical and academic settings (verbally and in writing).

  • Prepare and deliver educational content, including lectures, case discussions, and simulation-based learning.

  • Demonstrated experience in promoting a team-based work environment

  • Participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives (optional but encouraged).

Appointment rank may be at the Instructor (non-track), Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level on the Instructional Faculty Track, consistent with experience and interest.


This position will report to the Vice Chairs for Education and play a key leadership role in advancing the education mission across these departments. The successful candidate will lead initiatives to enhance curriculum innovation, faculty development, educational research, and program evaluation, as well as promote scholarship in education. The Director will collaborate closely with faculty, trainees, program directors, and educational leaders across departments


Position Responsibilities:




  • Faculty Development: Organize seminars, assess departmental needs, and connect faculty with development opportunities.




  • Educational Research: Lead scholarship efforts, support faculty publishing, and conduct curriculum assessment studies.




  • Mentoring Leadership: Coordinate mentoring programs for faculty and residents.




  • Curriculum Development: Introduce contemporary teaching strategies, support instructional design, and ensure accreditation compliance.




  • Program Evaluation: Direct evaluation efforts and mentor educational support staff.




  • Departmental Leadership: Advise on resource allocation and participate in education-related decision-making.




  • Professional Development: Engage in institutional and national education organizations (e.g., OCRME, SEA, AAPAE).

The Division Chief will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and collaborate closely with other pediatric leaders. Education: In collaboration with our Vice Chair for Education, develop and advance pediatric anesthesia curriculum, provide clinical teaching, and participate in departmental didactic programs. Serve as a role model and ensure pediatric anesthesia educational goals for residents and fellows are met.


Research: In collaboration with our Vice Chair for Research promote and support pediatric research initiatives to encourage academic growth. Develop strategies to enhance research programs and encourage multidisciplinary partnerships.


Leadership: Provide visionary leadership to foster excellence and innovation within the pediatric anesthesia division. Identify goals, monitor progress, and support professional development.


Collaboration: Collaborate with nursing leadership, surgeons, and children’s hospital leadership to optimize patient care and workflow. Work with cross-functional teams to improve operational efficiency and patient satisfaction.
