Please join us in congratulating Dr. Franklin Dexter on his appointment as the Dr. Samir D. Gergis Professor in the Department of Anesthesia. This endowed professorship recognizes faculty members with outstanding accomplishments in the science of anesthesiology, as well as excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, and mentorship. 

Dr. Dexter is an internationally recognized leader in anesthesia and operating room management research. During more than three decades of academic work, he has helped develop and advance the science of anesthesia and operating room management. He serves as Professor of Anesthesia and Director of the Division of Management Consulting at the University of Iowa and has authored more than 775 peer-reviewed publications, delivered more than 195 invited presentations worldwide, and consulted with hundreds of health care organizations. 

The Dr. Samir D. Gergis Professorship was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Gergis, a distinguished University of Iowa anesthesiologist and researcher whose career was dedicated to advancing the science and practice of anesthesiology. Dr. Dexter’s exceptional record of scholarship, innovation, and mentorship makes him a fitting recipient of this honor.
